The standard covers three main areas: • Voice annotation: central voice annunciations and indicators (EN 54 16), loudspeakers (EN 54-24) and power supplies (EN 54 4).

The DIN EN 54-24 standard specifies the requirements, test methods and performance criteria for loudspeakers, which are intended for the transmission of fire events as a link between a fire detection system and the users of a building. This standard specifies two types of loudspeaker environments: for type A loudspeakers, generally for indoor use, and type B, generally for outdoor use.

The purpose of a speaker for speech alarming as a component of a speech alarming system is to provide comprehensible warnings to persons inside or near a building in which there is a fire and thus allow these persons to take appropriate measures according to a predetermined evacuation plan. The main reason for the use of a speech alarming system instead of coded alarms by signaling devices is the reduction of the response time of the vulnerable persons in a given emergency as well as the indication of clear instructions regarding the next action steps. This means that loudspeakers for speech alarming must meet minimum acoustic performance as well as design and environmental requirements in order to be suitable for applications in fire alarm systems.
